Indeed, COVID-19 hit our sector harder than most and while we are bouncing back again, it is important to highlight one of the greatest success stories coming out of this pandemic. The rise of the takeaway industry.
The UK takeaway market has boomed and grown at an exponential rate. A new bar has been set by businesses that have elevated the quality of both good food and delivery service and, in our opinion, it’s here to stay.
That got us thinking.
What are the best independent takeaway restaurants in the UK and which are the most loved and most searched for?
Well, after scraping TripAdvisor’s data, we have pulled together a list of the 100 UK independent restaurants that specialise in pizza, kebab, fish and chips, Chinese, and Indian food to go!

There you have it! The fab 100. The UK’s most searched for independent takeaway restaurants, according to TripAdvisor data’s algorithm.
Let’s take a deeper dive into what we found out…
London dominates the top independent restaurant scene
Maybe it shouldn’t come as a shock, but it’s official - London, indeed, is the home to over 30% of these top restaurants.
In total, 32 of them are located in the UK’s capital city, including a whopping eight of the 20 best Chinese restaurants.
What do the reviews say?
It’s a known fact that the majority of Brits have a love affair with fish and chips.
It’s a staple of UK culture and, to that extent, it’s no surprise whatsoever that we also love to leave reviews on fish and chip restaurants!
In total, the 20 restaurant takeaways amassed nearly 50,000 reviews between them and more than 20,000 more compared to the named Indian establishments.
Out of the entire list, Magpie Cafe, in Whitby, was the cream of the crop, having been reviewed more than a whopping 8,000 times! Here’s a look at how the most reviewed of these takeaways stack up...
How do the prices match up?
So, we have our top 100, but how do they fair with each other when it comes to prices?
We have dived into their TripAdvisor pages, websites, and social media channels to find out just what it would cost us for a standard Margherita pizza, fish and chips, or a kebab with a pitta and side salad.
The prices make for decent reading and it turns out that a visit to one of the UK’s finest independent takeaway restaurants isn’t going to hit your wallet too hard.
It turns out that the average prices are as follows:
Margherita Pizza = £8
Fish and chips = £10
Kebab, pitta, and side salad = £9.50
